To Empower or Marginalize: Latinos and the American Catholic Church
In the midst of scandal, dwindling numbers, and a growing irrelevance to public life, Latinos represent a bright spot of hope, renewal, and growth for the American Catholic Church. However, Catholic leaders seem to be unwilling or incapable not only of serving Latinos, but even of recognizing their presence and the important role they play in the future of Church life. In this talk, Dr. Huckle will discuss how the language the Church uses to discuss Latinos has evolved from being clear, direct, and placing value on Latino needs and inclusion, to being vague and in some cases, blaming Latinos for their own exclusion.
